What does FUEM stand for?

74 members, 21 nationalities and one only commitment

The Formula UEM team, originating from the Universidad Europea de Madrid, has grown into a professional unit with eight departments and a dedicated executive board. This organization improves risk management, communication, and technical decision-making. Our sponsors’ support has been crucial, turning our engineering ambitions into reality. This year, we are set to compete in Formula Student Austria and Formula Student Spain.

Thus, we want to focus on our Electronic Area, a crucial subdepartment of Engine Department advances and contributions given by Eurocircuits.

Electronics

The fundamental objective of the electronics subsystem has been to focus on implementing electronics designed by the team, replacing as many commercial components as possible. In

addition to this, the subsystem has sought to optimize and refine all those areas that, during the analysis prior to the start of the season, were considered as potential areas for improvement.

These objetives are as follows:

  • Wiring optimization
  • In-house designed dashboard
  • Team designed data acquisition and communications system
  • Team designed BSPD
  • Electronic throttle control safety system designed by the team

Among the mentioned objectives is the optimization of the car’s wiring system. The team has focused on reducing weight and cost. Using computer-aided design tools, the team has been able to predict the amount of material, distribution, and costs. The weight of the wiring throughout the vehicle is 0.9 kg.

Communication and Data Acquisition System

The team has chosen to design its communication and data acquisition system to reduce reliance on commercial systems. This allows the vehicle’s electronics to become more flexible and

upgradeable for future implementations. This unit is known as NEXUS and has the following features:

  • CAN-BUS
  • SD Data Acquisition
  • 6-axis Inertial Motion Unit
  • 16 pins configurable for sensors or actuators
  • Open UART and I2C communication for future expansions

Brake System Plausibility Device

Due to the need for a brake system plausibility device, the team opted to design its own unit. This was done in order to implement the new auto-reset functionality within 10 seconds.

Dashboard

Driven by the introduction of team-designed electronics, possibilities have been expanded. Now the team has access to a greater and more varied amount of data that can be displayed to the driver. To achieve this, the team has focused on designing an interface completely

customized to the team’s needs. The Motec ecosystem makes it difficult to offer solutions outside of it.

Electronic Throttle Control Safety System

Electronic Throttle Control Safety System The implementation of the electronic throttle body requires plausibility systems to ensure its operation under safe conditions. To achieve this, the team has designed a PCB that is responsible for opening the shutdown circuit and cutting off power to the electronic throttle control in case the working conditions are not met. This PCB eliminates the dependency on the Motec ecosystem once again.

Thanks and recognition to Eurocircuits

We must admit it would have been probably impossible to improve FUEM’s PCB’s without the help of Eurocircuits.

We have managed to produce compact, silent, and cost-efficient boards. These PCBs contribute significantly to data acquisition on the track and improve the car’s reliability and performance.

The online PCB configurator streamlines the design process, enabling us to finalize details accurately, visualize the boards precisely, and reduce design errors.

We are thankful to have Eurocircuits as the main sponsor of the Electronic’s Department of FUEM.
